Barcelona's young defensive sensation Pau Cubarsí has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 2029, the LaLiga giants announced on Thursday.
The talented centre-back, who celebrated his 18th birthday last month, has rapidly emerged as an integral part of Barcelona's defensive lineup since his promotion to the first team. His previous contract was set to expire in 2027, and the new deal maintains his substantial €500 million ($519.8m) buyout clause.
In their official statement, Barcelona praised Cubarsí's exceptional qualities, noting, "Not only he is a resolute defender, which goes with the territory, but he reads the game very well and can play line-breaking passes worthy of the best midfielders." The club emphasized their long-term vision for the player, stating, "Cubarsí is 100% Barça, and he is set to remain so for many years more."
The defender's journey with Barcelona began in the club's renowned La Masia youth academy. His breakthrough came in January 2024 when former coach Xavi Hernández promoted him to the first team, where he made an impressive 24 appearances in his debut season.
Under current manager Hansi Flick, Cubarsí's development has continued to accelerate, with the young defender featuring in all 36 games this season. His remarkable club performances earned him international recognition, leading to his first cap for Spain in March 2024. The promising defender's talent was further showcased when he contributed to Spain's gold medal victory at the Paris Olympics, marking an extraordinary milestone in his burgeoning career.
