Barcelona's Alejandro Balde faced racial abuse during a disappointing 1-1 draw against Getafe on Saturday, adding another concerning incident to La Liga's ongoing battle against discrimination.
The match at Estadio Coliseum saw Barcelona continue their recent struggles, extending their winless streak to four consecutive La Liga matches. While Jules Kounde gave the visitors an early advantage, Getafe's Mauro Arambarri managed to level the score with a striking equalizer ten minutes before halftime.
However, the sporting narrative was overshadowed by reports of racial abuse directed at Barcelona's young left-back Alejandro Balde. The Spanish international confirmed the incident, expressing his frustration with the situation. "I was subjected to racist abuse in the first half. It shouldn't happen anymore," Balde told Marca. He further explained that he had reported the incident to the referee, who activated the protocol as per La Liga regulations.
The incident has prompted La Liga to prepare sanctions, as the league continues its efforts to combat racism in Spanish football. Despite the troubling experience, Balde indicated his desire to move forward, stating, "Now I want to focus on the incoming Champions League match. Now we have to try to forget it."
Barcelona's attention will now turn to their upcoming Champions League fixture against Benfica on January 21, where Hansi Flick's side will look to bounce back from their recent domestic setbacks.
