Bayern Munich Head Coach Vincent Kompany has urged his team to remain grounded despite their impressive 5-0 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last-16.
After securing a commanding 3-0 win in the first leg at home, Bayern completed the job on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory at Leverkusen. Second-half goals from Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies ensured the German giants progressed comfortably to the quarter-finals, where they will face Inter Milan.
"I think the boys showed again today how hungry they are for what they want to achieve," Kompany said after the match. "We've won now, and I don't want us to get too carried away."
The Belgian coach praised his team's balanced performance against a dangerous Leverkusen side: "We fought hard, defended crosses — and were still dangerous. It was a good balance."
While already looking ahead to the quarter-final matchup, Kompany emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on immediate challenges: "I'm really looking forward to Inter, but there are still a few games in between. My job is always to prepare for the next game. We're looking forward to Inter."
Kane, who continued his impressive Champions League form by netting his 10th goal of the campaign, highlighted the significance of their dominant performance across both legs.
"We've beaten Leverkusen 5-0 over two games, that represents two very good performances against a very good team," the England captain stated. "What we've learned from the Bundesliga is that Leverkusen can also press very well. With the crowd behind them, that creates a lot of pressure — we held our ground and didn't allow that to happen."
The comprehensive victory maintains Bayern's impressive season trajectory as they currently sit eight points clear of Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga. After missing out on the league title last season, Bayern appear well-positioned to reclaim their domestic crown while continuing their pursuit of European glory.
Inter Milan, who eliminated Feyenoord to reach the quarter-finals, will pose the next challenge for Kompany's men as they continue their Champions League campaign.
