Bayern Munich has set their sights on Borussia Dortmund's rising English star Jamie Gittens, expressing interest in a potential summer transfer for the 20-year-old winger who has been making waves in German football.
Gittens, who joined Dortmund in 2020, is experiencing a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga with impressive statistics, having found the back of the net seven times in 18 appearances. His performance has been equally notable in the Champions League, where he has scored four goals in seven matches as Dortmund maintains a strong position to progress to the knockout stages.
The young talent's journey to prominence began in England at Reading's youth setup before moving to Manchester City's academy. Following the path previously taken by Jadon Sancho, Gittens made the bold move to Dortmund in 2020. Since making his senior debut in April 2022, he has accumulated 83 appearances and scored 16 goals for the German club.
However, Dortmund's domestic form has been concerning under new head coach Nuri Sahin. A recent 4-2 defeat to Holstein Kiel has left the team languishing in 10th place, five points away from Champions League qualification spots. With a crucial match against Eintracht Frankfurt approaching, while Sahin's position appears secure for now, another defeat could increase pressure on both the coach and potentially impact Gittens' future, despite his contract running until 2028.
Bayern Munich's interest in Gittens is strategically timed, as they look to rejuvenate their aging wing options. With Kingsley Coman (28) and Serge Gnabry (29) entering their later career phases, and Leroy Sane's (29) contract set to expire in 2025, Gittens represents an appealing prospect for the Bavarian giants. The young winger particularly caught Bayern's attention during a November 2024 clash where he scored Dortmund's only goal in a 1-1 draw.
While Gittens is yet to receive a senior England cap, he has represented various youth levels, including the Under-21s. Despite Bayern Munich declining to comment when approached by The Athletic, Borussia Dortmund has taken a firm stance, insisting that Gittens is not for sale.
