Brazil have sacked manager Dorival Junior following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to their arch-rivals Argentina in World Cup qualifying. The decision comes despite Brazil currently sitting fourth in the South American qualification group, which would still see them progress to the 2026 finals.
Dorival, 62, had only been in charge of the national team since January 2024, managing a total of 16 games with a record of seven wins, six draws, and three losses. His tenure began promisingly with a 1-0 victory over England at Wembley in a friendly match last March, but the heavy defeat to Argentina proved to be the final straw for the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
"The board wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement," read a brief statement from the confederation announcing his departure.
The dismissed coach, who never represented Brazil as a player, had built his reputation in club management, with his greatest achievement being leading Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores title in 2022. However, his national team experience lasted less than a year.
Brazil's qualification campaign has been challenging, with the team having lost five of their 14 matches so far. Despite these struggles, they remain in a qualification position for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to Brazilian media reports, Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is currently the favorite to take over the prestigious role. Interestingly, before appointing Dorival, the CBF had unsuccessfully attempted to secure the services of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Athletic reported on Thursday that Brazil were keen to renew discussions with Ancelotti about potentially taking charge of the Seleção for the 2026 World Cup.
This coaching change represents yet another period of uncertainty for the five-time world champions, who continue their search for stability and a return to the pinnacle of international football.
