Chelsea fans can breathe a sigh of relief as club captain Reece James' absence from Saturday's FA Cup clash against Brighton was merely precautionary, according to manager Enzo Maresca.
James, who has had a challenging 2024-25 season due to persistent injury concerns, was notably missing from the matchday squad, prompting initial worry among supporters. However, Maresca quickly dispelled any concerns about a potential setback, explaining to reporters after the match that the decision was pre-planned. "It was planned. He is okay, he is training but it was to protect him," the Italian coach confirmed.
The precautionary measure, however, couldn't prevent Chelsea's exit from the FA Cup as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton. Despite taking an early lead through a Bart Verbruggen own goal, the Blues' advantage was short-lived. Brighton's Georginio Rutter leveled the score in the 12th minute, before Kaoru Mitoma sealed the victory for the Seagulls with a decisive goal in the 57th minute.
The London side won't have to wait long for a chance at redemption, as they are set to face Brighton again at the Amex Stadium in a crucial Premier League fixture next Friday. This time, they'll be facing Fabian Hurzeler's team in what promises to be another challenging encounter. The question remains whether James will be deemed ready to return to action for this important league clash.
