Joshua Kimmich has signed a new contract with Bayern Munich through to 2029, securing his future with the Bundesliga giants for the next four years. The 30-year-old Germany international has been a key figure for both club and country, now officially committing his future to Bayern.
"He's someone who always leads the way, whether at the club or as Germany captain," Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said of Kimmich. "His hunger is undiminished, as was evident again in the Champions League round of 16. His determination and commitment embody what FC Bayern stands for. He should build a bridge between our current generation and a new era."
Kimmich, who joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015, has been a fundamental part of the club's success over the past nine years. During his time with the Bavarian side, he has made 429 appearances, scoring 43 goals and providing 114 assists. His trophy cabinet includes eight Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy from 2020.
In September, Kimmich was appointed Germany captain following Ilkay Gundogan's international retirement. With 97 caps for his country, he has established himself as one of the most respected German players of his generation.
The Athletic had reported in January that a new deal for Kimmich was a priority for Bayern, with his previous contract set to expire in June. He now follows teammates Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Manuel Neuer in signing new contracts with the club in recent months.
Kimmich's extension represents a significant boost for Bayern and manager Vincent Kompany. Having been with the club since 2015 and achieved remarkable success, including the Champions League triumph in 2020, Kimmich carries natural gravitas within the squad.
While Neuer signed a contract extension in January until 2025, it has been made clear that Kimmich will eventually succeed him as Bayern's captain. This continuity in leadership will be crucial as the team continues to integrate younger talents like Musiala, Michael Olise, Davies, and Aleksandar Pavlovic.
This season has seen Kimmich return to his preferred midfield role after predominantly playing as a right-back under former manager Thomas Tuchel. His performances in the middle of the park have been largely excellent, though competition for places will intensify over the coming years with emerging players like Pavlovic, Joao Palhinha, and Konrad Laimer all vying for starting positions. Additionally, highly-rated Tom Bischof from TSG Hoffenheim will join the club in the summer.
Had Kimmich departed, Bayern would have faced the difficult task of replacing a player of his caliber and experience - a challenge given the limited availability of such talents and the substantial fees they command.
Bayern Munich, currently top of the Bundesliga, will next face Union Berlin on Saturday as they continue their pursuit of domestic and European success with Kimmich secured as a cornerstone of their future.
