INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Canada and Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies exited with an injury just 12 minutes into Canada's Concacaf Nations League third-place match against the United States on Sunday. The captain and left back went down twice on the pitch, requiring medical attention both times before leaving the game.
Davies appeared to be limping as he made his way from the pitch toward Canada's locker room. According to Canadian broadcaster TSN, Davies later returned from the locker room and assured the outlet he was "good." This positive update came as a relief to fans concerned about the severity of his condition.
The injury situation wasn't entirely unexpected. Prior to the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch had indicated that several Canadian players were dealing with knocks sustained during Thursday night's semifinal against Mexico. This was confirmed by assistant coach Mauro Biello, who took over after Marsch was sent off in the 54th minute.
"I think it was a knock. He didn't want to risk it at that point. He was banged up from the game against Mexico," Biello explained following Canada's 2-1 victory to secure third place in the tournament.
There were signs of potential issues before Sunday's match. The Athletic observed that Davies was the first player to depart from Canada's final training session on Saturday, while his teammates stayed behind to complete additional drills.
This isn't the first time Davies has battled injuries in 2025. Earlier this year, he suffered a hamstring strain during Bayern Munich's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord on January 22, which sidelined him for six matches. The 24-year-old also missed Canada's previous international window – which included two Nations League quarterfinal matches against Suriname – due to fatigue.
The timing of this latest setback raises concerns for Bayern Munich. The current Bundesliga leaders face upcoming league fixtures against St. Pauli and Augsburg before their Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Inter Milan on April 8, making Davies' availability a significant concern.
Despite losing their star player early in the match, Canada managed to overcome the adversity. Jonathan David's 59th-minute goal proved decisive as Canada defeated the United States 2-1 to claim third place in the Concacaf Nations League.
