England international and Bayern Munich midfielder Georgia Stanway faces a challenging road to Euro 2025 after suffering a severe knee injury during training. The 26-year-old has undergone surgery following a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) tear, with recovery expected to take between three to four months.
According to The Athletic, Stanway is unlikely to return to club action this season, raising concerns about her availability for England's Euro 2025 campaign in Switzerland. The timing of the injury presents a particular challenge, as she may not have any competitive playing time in 2025 before the tournament begins on July 2.
The injury comes as a significant blow to both Bayern Munich and the Lionesses, for whom Stanway has been a crucial player. Her importance to the national team was evident during the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where she featured in all six matches, starting four and contributing one goal as England advanced to the final.
The situation presents a dilemma for England manager Sarina Wiegman, who is already dealing with injury concerns among key players. Manchester City's Alex Greenwood is currently recovering from a medial collateral knee ligament injury sustained in December, while her club teammate Lauren Hemp has also recently undergone knee surgery.
This succession of injuries to key players could potentially impact England's preparation for Euro 2025, with Wiegman facing important decisions about squad selection as the tournament approaches.
