Former West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui has revealed the club's harrowing response to Michail Antonio's devastating car accident last December, admitting that staff feared for the striker's life following the horrific incident.
The Jamaica international forward was involved in a severe crash on December 7 when his Ferrari collided with a tree. The situation was so dire that emergency responders had to cut Antonio from the wreckage before airlifting him to hospital.
Antonio, now 34, has acknowledged how fortunate he is to have survived the accident. Following surgery for a lower leg fracture, the forward has begun his rehabilitation process in Dubai, though medical experts suggest his recovery could extend up to 12 months.
Reflecting on the incident, Lopetegui, who was at the helm of West Ham when the accident occurred, shared his perspective with The Guardian, stating dramatically, "We feared he was leaving us." The Spanish coach's comment underscores the gravity of the situation and the genuine concern that permeated throughout the club.
The Antonio incident was just one of several challenges Lopetegui faced during his brief tenure at the London Stadium. Another significant issue was the gambling allegations surrounding Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paqueta. However, Lopetegui praised Paqueta's handling of the situation, noting, "He handled it very well; we were pleased with his commitment."
Lopetegui's time with the Hammers came to an end on January 8, after just 22 matches in charge. While Graham Potter has since taken over the managerial position, Lopetegui maintains he should have been given more time to implement his vision at the club. The former Real Madrid coach is currently awaiting new opportunities to return to management.
