Premier League legend Sergio Aguero is trading his football boots for racing gloves as he takes on a new challenge in the world of electric motorsport. The former Manchester City striker has partnered with Formula E champion Pascal Wehrlein at Porsche for the groundbreaking Evo Sessions event, where he'll drive the Porsche 99X Electric GEN3 Evo Formula E car at Miami's International Autodrome.
The event, which took place on March 5-6, 2025, brings together eleven personalities from various fields including sports, technology, and entertainment. These participants underwent rigorous training to prepare for the experience of driving Formula E's lightning-fast GEN3 Evo race car, which can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds.
"Eleven personalities from the realms of sports, tech, and entertainment have undergone an intensive training program, including simulator sessions, physical conditioning, driver coaching, and engineering briefings, all in preparation for getting behind the wheel of the lightning-fast GEN3 Evo race car," stated Formula E in their official announcement.
The Evo Sessions initiative aims to provide fans with unprecedented access to the world of electric motorsport. "With all the action documented in real-time, fans will get an unprecedented look into the skills and precision required to compete at the pinnacle of electric motorsport," Formula E added.
Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, shared his excitement about the innovative concept: "The initial reaction when I presented the concept of 'Evo Sessions' to our teams and partners was, 'this is wild!' - which is when I immediately knew we had to bring it to life. We wanted to do something that has never been done before in motorsport; something that would give audiences and our fan base a unique perspective into the world of a Formula E driver, through the eyes of some of their favourite online personalities."
Dodds further elaborated on the strategic importance of the event: "Formula E is the fastest growing motorsport in the world, and we have a clear target to hit half a billion fans by 2030. Through collaborating with some of the biggest names in popular culture right now, we're able to open up Formula E to a whole new fanbase."
Having experienced driving a Formula E car himself, Dodds believes the event will be "truly eye opening on what it takes to be an elite racing driver. It will uncover the world-class ability of the drivers and teams alike and highlight the raw skill and ingenuity we have in the championship."
Aguero's participation is particularly notable given his legendary status in football. During his decade-long stint at Manchester City from 2011 to 2021, he scored 260 goals, including the unforgettable last-minute winner against QPR that clinched City's first Premier League title in 2012. The Argentine striker won five Premier League titles and became the league's highest-scoring foreign player with 184 goals. His trophy cabinet also includes an FA Cup and six League Cups with City. Aguero earned 101 caps for Argentina before retiring in December 2021 at age 33 due to a heart condition, shortly after joining Barcelona.
While Aguero and the other participants have already completed their racing experience, fans will need to exercise patience to witness the full journey. A feature-length documentary chronicling the Evo Sessions is scheduled for release later in 2025. In the meantime, snippets of the event have been shared across social media channels, offering glimpses of the participants' progression from rookies to racers.
The Evo Sessions represents a unique crossover between the worlds of football and motorsport, giving fans a rare opportunity to see how a football icon adapts to the high-speed challenges of electric racing.
