Gary Lineker has issued a cautionary message to Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney about their ambitious football ventures, as the Hollywood duo expand their sporting portfolio beyond the Welsh club.
Under Reynolds and McElhenney's ownership, Wrexham has experienced a remarkable transformation, climbing from the National League to League One. The club currently finds itself in a fierce promotion battle with Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers at the top of League One, potentially eyeing another step up the football pyramid.
The duo's football interests have grown beyond Wrexham, with both having invested in Mexican Liga MX team Club Necaxa. Reynolds is also poised to become an investor in Colombian side Club Deportivo La Equidad, demonstrating their expanding influence in global football.
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker addressed the potential limitations of Wrexham's current trajectory. The former England striker emphasized the increasing financial demands as clubs climb the leagues, particularly highlighting the challenges that await in the Premier League.
"Obviously the higher you go, probably to compete with the top teams in the league, the more you need to invest," Lineker explained. "It's worked so far and it depends on what their desires are, what their ambitions are, I think they are already taking other clubs on in different parts of the world in a similar sort of TV project."
The success of the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary has catapulted the club into global consciousness, with Lineker noting that Wrexham has likely developed an international fanbase as a result. However, he warned that reaching the "upper echelons of Premier League football" would present significantly greater challenges for the owners.
Wrexham's immediate focus remains on their upcoming fixtures, with a match against struggling Shrewsbury Town before a crucial encounter with league leaders Birmingham City at the SToK Racecourse. The Birmingham clash carries additional star power, with NFL legend Tom Brady now part of the Blues' boardroom team.
