Manchester City's star striker Erling Haaland has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a groundbreaking contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2034. The new deal, which extends beyond his current contract set to expire in 2027, would see the Norwegian phenomenon remain with the club until he turns 34.
Since joining City from Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has been nothing short of exceptional, amassing an impressive 111 goals in 126 appearances. His impact on English football has been remarkable, maintaining the best minutes-to-goal ratio in Premier League history among players with over 5,000 minutes played, averaging a goal every 91 minutes.
"I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club," Haaland expressed. "Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it's the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody."
The length of Haaland's new contract surpasses the previous Premier League record set by Cole Palmer's nine-year deal with Chelsea last August. City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, emphasized the significance of the deal, stating, "The fact he [Haaland] is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player and his love for the club."
The 23-year-old's statistics tell a story of unprecedented success. His debut season in 2022-23 saw him score 52 goals across all competitions at a remarkable rate of one goal every 79 minutes, with a 28.7% shot conversion rate. While his scoring rate has slightly decreased this season to a goal every 118 minutes, he has still managed to net 21 times in 28 appearances.
According to Opta's calculations, if Haaland maintains his current ratio of 0.9 goals per game, he could surpass Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League record of 260 goals by his 287th game, potentially achieving this milestone during the 2029-30 season. He currently sits at 79 Premier League goals, placing him third in Manchester City's all-time Premier League scoring list, behind only Sergio Aguero (184) and Raheem Sterling (91).
The timing of Haaland's contract extension follows manager Pep Guardiola's recent two-year contract renewal. Since his arrival, Haaland has helped the club secure two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the Super Cup. The Norwegian forward, son of former City midfielder Alf-Inge, continues to be a crucial figure for the defending champions, who currently trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 12 points with an extra game played.
This significant contract renewal comes as Manchester City awaits the outcome of their disciplinary case against the Premier League, involving 115 charges which the club has denied.
