Former Napoli and Italy star Lorenzo Insigne made a surprising return to Toronto FC's starting lineup against the New York Red Bulls on March 22, despite previous reports suggesting he wasn't part of the club's plans for the 2025 MLS season.
The Italian winger, who had been notably absent from the team's first four games of the season, marked his comeback with an assist for Deandre Kerr's 70th minute opener. Despite Insigne's contribution, Toronto FC ultimately fell 2-1 to the Red Bulls.
This appearance was Insigne's first competitive action since a brief 10-minute cameo in the 2024 season finale on October 5. The Designated Player, who ranks among MLS's highest-paid stars, has had a polarizing impact on the club since his arrival and was reportedly part of a fractured locker room that contributed to former head coach Bob Bradley's departure.
Prior to the start of the season, Toronto FC had attempted to offload the former Napoli cult hero, with interest reported from clubs in Spain, Turkey, and elsewhere in Europe. However, Insigne reportedly rejected these potential moves away from the Canadian side.
Throughout his time with Toronto FC, Insigne has made 55 appearances with 29 goal contributions, highlighting his technical quality despite the team's struggles. The defeat to the Red Bulls has dropped Toronto to the bottom of the Eastern Conference with the worst goal differential across both conferences.
Toronto FC will next face Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps on March 29 at the BMO Field before traveling to take on Inter Miami on April 6, with questions still surrounding Insigne's long-term future at the club.
