In a surprising turn of events, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's visit to the New York Red Bulls has sparked excitement among MLS fans. The German coach, who recently took on the role of Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, was spotted at the club's snowy training ground, posing with the team's jersey.
Following his unexpected departure from Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, Klopp chose a different path rather than immediately returning to club management. In October 2024, he accepted the position with Red Bull, officially beginning his new chapter in January 2025. As part of his duties, he has been touring various clubs within the Red Bull organization, including RB Leipzig and Red Bull Bragantino, before making his way to New York.
Reflecting on his decision to join Red Bull, Klopp, 57, explained, "You cannot make your decision depending on what reactions there will be. I can still work a few more years. But I did not see myself on the sidelines for now. It was clear for me that I would do something. So then Red Bull came. For me it is outstanding." The move raised eyebrows among some observers, particularly given his historical connections to Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
The timing of Klopp's visit coincides with an exciting period for the New York Red Bulls, who recently achieved their best MLS season in years. The team reached the MLS Cup Playoff final for the first time since 2008, despite finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference. Their remarkable run included victories over local rivals New York City FC and Orlando City SC, though they ultimately fell short in a 2-1 defeat to LA Galaxy in the final.
The club has shown ambition in the transfer market, strengthening their squad with notable additions including Emil Forsberg, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, Felipe Carballo, and Wiktor Bogacz. These reinforcements have provided manager Sandro Schwarz with additional tactical options as the team prepares for their 2025 MLS season opener against FC Cincinnati on February 23.
During his nine-year tenure at Liverpool, Klopp established himself as one of football's elite managers, securing both Premier League and Champions League titles. His presence at the New York Red Bulls, even in a broader organizational role, has generated considerable excitement among supporters, who hope his expertise might contribute to the club's pursuit of their first MLS Cup trophy.
