Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt have reached a verbal agreement for the transfer of Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, marking another significant move in the January transfer window for the Premier League champions.
The Athletic initially reported on January 15 that Frankfurt had rejected City's first approach, though negotiations continued with expectations of reaching a deal. The German club had set their asking price at €80million (£67.1m; $82m), while City's initial valuation was around €60m (£50.4m; $61.5m). Despite the initial gap in valuations, personal terms between Marmoush and City were never a sticking point.
The 25-year-old striker has already traveled to England for his medical examination before completing his move to the Etihad Stadium. In a telling sign of his imminent departure, Marmoush was notably absent from Frankfurt's lineup in their recent Bundesliga victory over Borussia Dortmund. The German club officially confirmed they were "in talks with another club regarding the transfer of Omar Marmoush." In what appeared to be a farewell gesture, the forward joined his teammates on the pitch for post-match celebrations and waved goodbye to Frankfurt supporters.
Since his arrival from Wolfsburg in summer 2023, Marmoush has demonstrated impressive goal-scoring prowess, netting 37 goals in 67 appearances for Frankfurt. His recent form has been particularly noteworthy, with his latest goal coming in Frankfurt's 4-1 win against Freiburg on Tuesday, bringing his season tally to 15 league goals.
The timing of this acquisition is crucial for Manchester City, who have been seeking to bolster their attacking options following Julian Alvarez's summer move to Atletico Madrid. The need for reinforcement is particularly acute given Erling Haaland's heavy workload, having started 28 matches across all competitions this season, including all 27 games in the Premier League and Champions League.
This transfer continues City's active January window, following agreements to sign defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras. Currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, City will next face Ipswich Town on Sunday, January 19, as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
