Manchester United's struggles have reached new depths under manager Ruben Amorim, with the club sinking to historic lows in their Premier League campaign. Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in October, Amorim has failed to spark a turnaround, with the team now sitting 15th in the table, 15 points adrift of the top four and just 12 points above the relegation zone.
The Portuguese coach has openly acknowledged the magnitude of his task, admitting he faces "a lot of problems" and describing his job as "so hard." His candid January assessment of his squad as "the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United" may have been premature, but the statistics paint a grim picture.
United's current tally of 29 points from 25 matches represents their lowest point total at this stage of any Premier League season. The team has lost 12 of those 25 matches – a staggering 48% loss rate. Under Amorim's leadership, the club has managed just four wins, two draws, and eight losses in 14 Premier League matches, with only five teams earning fewer points during his tenure.
The manager's overall record of nine wins, three draws, and nine losses in 21 matches gives him a 43% win rate – the lowest of any permanent United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's 2013 retirement. This falls well short of his predecessors, including Jose Mourinho (52%), David Moyes (57%), Erik ten Hag (67%), and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (71%).
Goals have been particularly hard to come by, with United scoring just 28 in 25 league matches. Their top scorer, Amad Diallo, who has now been ruled out for the season with an ankle injury, managed six league goals. The team's center forwards, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirzkee, have struggled notably, combining for just five goals in 45 Premier League appearances.
The January transfer window did little to address these issues. While the club added Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, they allowed Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia to depart on loan. The decision to let both Rashford and Antony leave without securing replacements has proven particularly costly, especially given Antony's subsequent success at Real Betis, where he has already matched his entire previous season's goal tally for United in just four matches.
Injuries have further complicated matters, with Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer joining long-term absentees Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, and Jonny Evans on the sidelines. This has forced Amorim to rely increasingly on inexperienced players, as evidenced by the youthful bench in their recent 1-0 defeat to Tottenham.
Despite these challenges, captain Bruno Fernandes has maintained his creative output, ranking fourth in the league for chances created with 53, though this has not translated into goals. The team's current trajectory suggests they will finish with their worst-ever Premier League goal tally, projecting to just 44 goals for the season at their current rate of 1.12 goals per game.
