Manchester United's victory over Rangers in the Europa League was overshadowed by mounting uncertainty surrounding the futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford.
Following the dramatic 2-1 win, head coach Ruben Amorim remained noncommittal about potential transfers, stating he "did not know what will happen" before the February 3 transfer window deadline. While speculation swirls around several United players, including Antony and Tyrell Malacia, attention has primarily focused on Garnacho and Rashford's situations.
Garnacho, who started for the third time in four games, has drawn interest from Chelsea and Napoli. The 20-year-old Argentina international, who has made 118 appearances and scored 23 goals since his 2022 debut, could command a fee around £60 million. United's tight profit and sustainability rules (PSR) situation makes selling a homegrown player like Garnacho particularly attractive from a financial perspective, though such a move would likely face significant fan backlash.
Rio Ferdinand, speaking to TNT Sports, offered insight into Garnacho's situation: "The fans were making their feelings very clear. They love him. He gets you on the edge of your seat." Ferdinand suggested that Garnacho's potential departure stems more from tactical considerations than personal preference, noting that "Amorim doesn't play with out and out wingers, so you don't see the best of him."
Meanwhile, Rashford's absence continues to raise eyebrows. The 27-year-old has featured in just one of United's last 10 matches since December 12. While sources close to Rashford maintain he has no issues with Amorim and remains willing to play, potential moves to AC Milan and Barcelona face significant hurdles. Milan's impending signing of Kyle Walker limits their ability to add another English player, while Barcelona's interest depends on outgoing transfers.
Ferdinand was particularly pointed in his assessment of Rashford's situation, stating, "The club want to get him out, you can see that." The former United defender advocated for a fresh start, observing, "When he burst on the scene I always remembered him smiling, living the dream. I have not seen those emotions for a long time."
Amorim, while acknowledging the ongoing speculation, maintained his focus on immediate team matters: "They are not other manager's players, now they are my players," he said. "You know the situation of the club. Before doing anything, we have to think what brought us to this situation. We have to be really clear on everything."
