Rayados reportedly looking to sign América goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón
Monterrey appears ready to make a significant move in the Mexican football market as reports suggest they are targeting Club América's star goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón. The talented shot-stopper, who has established himself as one of Mexico's premier goalkeepers, has caught the attention of the northern giants who are preparing for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
Since joining América in 2023, Malagón has been nothing short of exceptional, securing three titles in just four tournaments with Las Águilas. His impressive performances have not only made him a cornerstone of América's success but have also elevated him above veteran Guillermo Ochoa as Mexico's first-choice goalkeeper on the international stage.
According to Transfermarkt, Malagón is currently valued at $7 million, though any potential move would require Rayados to trigger his $8 million release clause. This investment would be significant but potentially worthwhile for a Monterrey side looking to strengthen their squad ahead of major competitions.
The interest from Rayados comes amid some goalkeeper concerns at the club. Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada started the Clausura 2025 as the first-choice option but lost his position to Luis Cárdenas after conceding eight goals in just four matches. With Martín Demichelis at the helm and high-profile signings like Sergio Ramos already secured for their Club World Cup campaign, Monterrey is clearly ambitious about building a world-class squad.
Though no formal negotiations have reportedly begun between the clubs, speculation suggests that Rayados could offer a substantial financial package to lure away the goalkeeper who has recorded an impressive 41 clean sheets in 102 matches with América.
Malagón's journey to becoming Mexico's top goalkeeper is particularly interesting. The keeper revealed in 2019 that his childhood idol was Oswaldo Sánchez, who represented Mexico at the 2006 World Cup. "I started playing football when I was four years old," Malagón shared. "I told my dad to enroll me in the Zamora football school because of him (Oswaldo Sánchez), and that's how it all began. From the age of four to eight, I had all of Chivas' jerseys because of him; my admiration was so great that I wanted to be like him."
While transfer rumors swirl, Malagón remains focused on his current duties with América. The club faces a crucial match this weekend as they host Tigres on Saturday in Matchday 13 of the Clausura 2025. Las Águilas are determined to maintain their position at the top of the tournament standings, though they'll face stiff competition from Guido Pizarro and his Tigres side, who currently sit in third place and could potentially challenge for the top spot if León fails to defeat Pumas on Sunday.
Throughout the current Clausura 2025 tournament, Malagón has conceded just seven goals, further cementing his reputation as Liga MX's premier goalkeeper. Whether he'll be wearing the Rayados jersey for the upcoming Club World Cup remains to be seen, but his quality between the posts is undeniable.
