Crystal Palace has rejected a substantial £70 million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for their captain Marc Guehi on the January transfer deadline day. The proposed deal included £55 million upfront with an additional £15 million in add-ons, as reported by The Athletic.
The rejection comes as Tottenham Hotspur continues to struggle this season, currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League. Ange Postecoglou's squad has been plagued by injuries, prompting the North London club to seek reinforcements during the winter transfer window. Following the failed bid for Guehi, Spurs quickly pivoted to secure Kevin Danso on loan from Ligue 1 side Lens.
According to Ed Aarons of The Guardian, Crystal Palace's decision to reject the offer was primarily due to the timing. The Eagles felt that finding a suitable replacement for their captain at such a late stage in the transfer window would be impractical, as they had not extensively scouted potential alternatives for Oliver Glasner's squad.
This isn't the first time Guehi has attracted significant interest from Premier League clubs. Newcastle United previously saw major bids rejected for the England international, with Crystal Palace maintaining a firm stance on retaining their prized defender.
The 24-year-old center-back's current contract at Selhurst Park runs until the summer of 2026. However, with Guehi showing no indication of extending his stay beyond the current terms, Crystal Palace may be more receptive to offers during the upcoming summer transfer window to avoid potentially losing their captain on a free transfer in 2026.
