Former Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz has revealed the pivotal role he played in bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford and the unique challenge that helped shape the Portuguese superstar into one of football's greatest players.
Back in 2003, when Sir Alex Ferguson was contemplating signing young talent from Sporting CP, he turned to Queiroz for guidance on choosing between two promising Portuguese players: Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma. In a recent interview with 'O Jogo', Queiroz recounted the crucial conversation that would alter United's history.
"I was in my office when they called me to say that Ferguson needed me," Queiroz explained. "At that time, I had no responsibility for scouting. I sat down in front of him and he presented me with two names from a club I knew well." When pressed to choose between Ronaldo and Quaresma, Queiroz initially suggested both players but ultimately recommended Ronaldo.
The decision proved to be masterful, as Ronaldo went on to achieve remarkable success during his first spell at Manchester United, scoring 118 goals in 292 appearances across all competitions. His tenure at Old Trafford saw him secure the Premier League title, Champions League glory, and the prestigious Ballon d'Or.
However, it wasn't just about signing Ronaldo; Queiroz played a crucial role in developing the young talent's potential. He revealed a significant moment when he challenged Ronaldo in his office: "You were born to be the best player in the world and that is a privilege, you should be grateful for that blessing. I am here to help you, but you have to tell me if you are available to work because, if you are not, I don't have the patience to waste time."
Ronaldo's response demonstrated the dedication that would define his career. The very next morning, he knocked on Queiroz's door, eager to begin work. This commitment to excellence has remained constant throughout his career, leading him to become one of football's most decorated players.
Now at 40, Ronaldo continues to demonstrate his extraordinary longevity with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner shows no signs of slowing down, setting his sights on reaching 1,000 career goals before considering retirement. His journey from a promising youth prospect to a football legend serves as a testament to the power of talent combined with unwavering determination and proper guidance.
