Rangers continue to shine in Europa League, securing last 16 spot despite domestic struggles
The Rangers Football Club and the Europa League share a special connection, as former midfielder Scott Arfield aptly noted. This season has proven no different, with European competition serving as a bright spot amid domestic challenges.
The Scottish club secured their place in the last 16 with a victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, marking their fifth consecutive appearance in the Europa League knockouts. Manager Philippe Clement achieved this feat despite facing significant obstacles, including a demanding fixture list and numerous defensive injuries.
"It's good people start to see more and more, things a few months ago people maybe didn't believe," Clement remarked. "The club is on the right way. Is it fast enough to win everything? That's our ambition."
The path to qualification was particularly challenging, with Rangers starting the final matchday in 13th place before climbing to eighth. They faced formidable opposition, including Manchester United, Tottenham, Lyon, and Olympiakos - four of the seven teams that advanced directly to the last 16.
The team's resilience was evident in their ability to adapt, using seven different back-four combinations across eight matches due to injuries. They showed remarkable versatility, with players like Neraysho Kasanwirjo playing out of position before suffering a season-ending injury, and captain James Tavernier filling in at center-back against Manchester United and Union.
"Maybe we don't have the talent of other teams - but it's about mentality," Clement emphasized. "Massive clubs with massive budgets have finished behind us, and around us, the achievement is only bigger by beating four of the seven top teams."
Looking ahead, Rangers await their next opponent from a pool including Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, Twente, or Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce. While the current squad has undergone significant changes since their 2022 final appearance against Eintracht Frankfurt, their Europa League prowess remains intact.
The team's prospects are further strengthened by the potential addition of previously unregistered players like Danilo and Ianis Hagi, along with the return of injured squad members. When asked about their chances of going all the way, young player Ross McCausland confidently stated, "Definitely, 100%."
Whether or not they reach those heights, Rangers fans can anticipate another thrilling Europa League journey in the spring, continuing their club's remarkable affinity for the competition.
