Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds could be setting his sights on a new football venture in his hometown, with reports linking him to a potential £300 million ($372m) takeover of Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps. The Mirror reports that the current owners are open to offers, and local fans are enthusiastic about the prospect of Reynolds leading a consortium to acquire the team, having witnessed his successful stewardship of Wrexham alongside Rob McElhenney.
While there's no concrete approach at this stage, Reynolds' interest in football ownership has grown significantly since McElhenney first approached him about purchasing Wrexham in 2020. The duo has already expanded their football portfolio by joining a celebrity group that owns a minority stake in Mexican club Necaxa. Reynolds previously explored acquiring the NHL's Ottawa Senators, though those plans were ultimately shelved. A connection between Reynolds and the Whitecaps already exists, as Wrexham faced the Canadian club in a pre-season match last summer.
Reynolds' estimated net worth of €350m, built through his Hollywood career and bolstered by successful business ventures including Wrexham sponsor Aviation American Gin, suggests he would need additional investors for such an acquisition. The proposed deal would be approximately 150 times larger than the Wrexham purchase, making it unlikely for Reynolds to proceed alone.
Meanwhile, both clubs continue their respective campaigns. Wrexham is currently in contention for at least a League One play-off position, challenging Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers for automatic promotion. Reynolds and McElhenney maintain their ultimate ambition of reaching the Premier League with Wrexham. As for the potential acquisition target, the Vancouver Whitecaps are preparing to begin their 2025 MLS season under their current ownership structure.
