Former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has made a playful jab at old rivals Atletico Madrid with his shirt number choice at his new club Monterrey, selecting the number 93 in reference to his iconic Champions League final moment.
The 38-year-old defender, who joined the Mexican Liga MX side this winter as a free agent, chose the number to commemorate his historic 93rd-minute equalizer against Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final. That goal forced extra time, leading to Real Madrid's eventual 4-1 victory over their city rivals, with additional goals coming from Gareth Bale, Marcelo, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ramos had been without a club since departing Sevilla in July 2024, making Monterrey his third team since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. Despite his various club affiliations, his connection to Los Blancos remains evident, as demonstrated by his tribute through the jersey number selection.
"The 93rd minute was epic. It is a tribute to Real Madrid and to my career," Ramos told the media, with Real Madrid's social media channels also acknowledging their legend's gesture.
While Monterrey is scheduled to face Juarez on Sunday, February 9, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Ramos in action, as he is not expected to make his debut until the following week.
The shirt number choice not only serves as a reminder of one of the most dramatic moments in Champions League history but also demonstrates how deeply ingrained Ramos's Real Madrid legacy remains, even as he continues his career on a new continent.
