Premier League legend Alan Shearer has expressed certainty that Erling Haaland will surpass his all-time Premier League scoring record following the Norwegian striker's remarkable new 10-year commitment to Manchester City.
The prolific City forward, who has already amassed an impressive 79 goals in 87 league appearances, signed an unprecedented nine-and-a-half-year contract extension on Friday. This development comes despite a challenging first half of the season for the defending champions, whose title defense prospects have significantly diminished.
Shearer, whose record of 260 Premier League goals has stood the test of time, acknowledges that his historic achievement is destined to fall should Haaland fulfill his extended tenure at the Etihad. Speaking to BBC Sport, Shearer remarked, "If he stays for that long, no doubt he will break that record. My record will go one day. It might be somebody else's by then - like Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah."
The former Newcastle United striker's record has previously been challenged by notable forwards, including Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane. While Kane, currently second on the all-time list and 47 goals shy of the record, could still mount a challenge should he return to the Premier League, Haaland's consistent scoring rate suggests he would need approximately five more seasons to approach Shearer's milestone.
The timing of Haaland's contract extension has sparked speculation regarding Manchester City's pending Premier League investigation into alleged financial irregularities. Nevertheless, securing the long-term commitment of Haaland, who was previously rumored to be considering a move to continental Europe during his prime years, represents a significant coup for the club's future aspirations.
