Tottenham Hotspur have entered discussions with Bayern Munich regarding a potential permanent transfer of promising forward Mathys Tel. The 19-year-old French talent, who has struggled to secure regular playing time since his arrival from Rennes in 2022, is now exploring options away from the Allianz Arena.
The negotiations are at an advanced stage, with reports suggesting a potential deal worth around €60million (£50.2m; $62.5m). If terms are agreed upon, Tel will then make his decision about a possible move to North London. The young striker's situation has also caught the attention of other Premier League clubs, with Manchester United expressing interest in a loan deal and Chelsea making earlier inquiries about his availability this January.
Despite limited opportunities, Tel has made a significant impact during his time at Bayern Munich, accumulating 16 goals and seven assists across 83 appearances. His potential was evident early on when, at just 17 years old, he became Bayern's youngest-ever goalscorer in a 5-0 victory over Viktoria Cologne, surpassing the previous record held by Jamal Musiala. His contribution to Bayern's successful 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign included five crucial league goals.
However, Tel's development has somewhat stalled this season, with only 458 minutes of playing time. The French Under-21 international has started just nine Bundesliga games over the past three seasons, though he did feature in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava, playing 62 minutes.
Despite these challenges, Tel remains one of the most promising talents in European football. His versatility allows him to operate either as a left-sided forward or through the middle as a centre-forward. However, with Harry Kane's record-breaking arrival at Bayern Munich, Tel's opportunities to develop as a traditional number 9 have been limited. His combination of skill and dynamic goalscoring ability suggests he could evolve into one of Europe's most dangerous inside forwards, provided he receives the regular playing time needed to realize his considerable potential.
