In a significant move for Italian football, Texas-based private equity firm Presidio Investors has successfully completed its acquisition of Serie A club Hellas Verona, marking another milestone in American investment in Italian football. The Austin-headquartered company, known for its partnerships in media, entertainment, technology, and financial services across North America and Europe, has acquired 100 percent ownership of the historic club.
Hellas Verona, currently positioned 17th in Serie A and notable for their 1984-85 league title triumph, becomes the ninth Serie A club to receive North American backing, joining the ranks of prestigious clubs like Inter, AC Milan, Roma, and Parma.
Former owner Maurizio Setti, who will continue his involvement with the club as Senior Advisor of Football Operations, reflected on his 13-year tenure with pride. "From the first promotion to Serie A in my debut season to last season's survival, there have been countless moments of joy tied to these colors," Setti remarked, highlighting achievements both on and off the pitch that initially seemed unattainable.
The transition brings new leadership to the Verona-based club, with Italo Zanzi stepping in as Executive Chairman of the Board. Zanzi emphasized the firm's commitment to honoring the club's traditions while pursuing operational improvements: "We are fully aware of the responsibilities that come with acquiring the club. We look forward to supporting and working alongside Hellas Verona's staff, players, fans and the city of Verona to execute a growth plan to increase the club's competitive standing and realize its full potential."
Christian Puscasiu, Managing Partner of Presidio Investors, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, acknowledging the significance of leading a club deeply embedded in Verona's identity. He specifically praised Setti's stewardship and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with key figures Sean Sogliano and Simona Gioe in shaping the club's future success.
This takeover represents another chapter in the growing American influence in Italian football, as North American investors continue to recognize the potential and value in one of Europe's most historic football leagues.
