United States men's national team midfielder Luca de la Torre has made a significant move, joining San Diego FC on a 12-month loan from LaLiga's Celta Vigo for the MLS club's inaugural season.
The 26-year-old San Diego native returns to his hometown after spending two productive seasons with Celta, where he accumulated 67 appearances, contributing four goals and nine assists across all competitions. His experience in one of Europe's top leagues brings valuable expertise to the expanding MLS landscape.
De la Torre's international credentials are equally impressive, having earned 24 caps with the USMNT, including crucial appearances in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and the 2024 Copa América. His success with the national team includes winning two Concacaf Nations League titles in 2023 and 2024.
In an interesting twist, De la Torre will reunite with former USMNT interim coach Mikey Varas, who last called him up to the national team in September 2024. Varas now leads San Diego FC, potentially offering a seamless transition for the midfielder in his new role.
San Diego FC's sporting director Tyler Heaps expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, "We're thrilled to bring Luca home to San Diego. Luca's journey -- competing in some of the world's top leagues and representing the USMNT -- speaks volumes about his dedication and talent." Heaps emphasized the symbolic importance of the transfer, adding, "But what makes this moment truly special is that he's coming home to represent the city that shaped him. We're excited for him to connect with our fans and community in a meaningful way and play an important role in our historic inaugural season."
The loan agreement includes a purchase option, potentially setting the stage for a long-term commitment. Meanwhile, Celta Vigo also announced the departure of 28-year-old winger Jonathan Bamba, who will join Chicago Fire as a designated player through 2027, marking another significant movement of talent between LaLiga and MLS.
