Hugo Lloris Turns Back the Clock to Help LAFC Advance in CONCACAF Champions Cup
Former France and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris delivered a vintage performance to help LAFC progress to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, despite a 2-1 loss to Columbus Crew in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie.
The World Cup-winning goalkeeper made multiple highlight-reel saves that proved decisive as LAFC advanced with a 4-2 aggregate victory. His experience shined in the high-pressure continental competition, particularly in the second half when Columbus was pushing for goals to overcome the deficit.
The match showcased the best of Lloris' abilities, with a game-changing save in the 62nd minute standing out as he cleared Max Arfsten's shot off the line. This crucial intervention helped preserve LAFC's aggregate lead when Columbus was threatening to mount a comeback.
In the second leg, Columbus Crew took an early lead through Jacen Russell-Rowe in the 10th minute, and former LAFC star Diego Rossi doubled their advantage with a penalty right before halftime (45'). Columbus controlled possession and created several chances, particularly in the first half, but Lloris and the LAFC defense held firm after the break.
Denis Bouanga managed to pull one back for LAFC deep into stoppage time (90'+6), but the result was already secured thanks to their commanding first-leg performance and Lloris' heroics between the posts.
Following their victory over Columbus Crew, LAFC will face either Inter Miami CF or Cavalier FC in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Before that, they return to MLS action on March 15 against Austin FC at the BMO stadium, followed by an away fixture against Sporting KC.
