In a frustrating turn of events for football fans, the EFL Trophy round of 16 clash between Wrexham and Port Vale has been called off, despite the Vale Park playing surface passing an early morning inspection.
The decision was made following extensive consultation with the local Safety Advisory Group, who expressed serious concerns about hazardous conditions in the areas surrounding the stadium. While groundskeepers had successfully prepared the pitch for play, the forecast of additional snowfall during the afternoon and evening hours forced officials to prioritize public safety.
"The primary consideration has to be the safety of supporters and staff accessing the venue," a club spokesperson stated, noting that the surrounding areas had been identified as potentially dangerous for match attendees.
The club has assured ticket holders that all purchases for the originally scheduled January 7 fixture will remain valid for the rescheduled match, with the new date pending announcement.
For Wrexham, this postponement creates an extended competitive break. The Red Dragons' next scheduled fixture isn't until January 16, when they face Shrewsbury Town in League One. This gap in their schedule was already expanded after their weekend match against Reading was postponed due to Reading's FA Cup commitments.
